Skill level: moderate
visit lanceweiler.com for a working exampleUsing a news feed mashup to have your news updates appear all over the internet just by simply bookmarking.
Social Bookmarking is a way to collect the sites that you like in one central place, so that they can be accessed and shared from any computer with an internet connection. For this example you’ll need to establish a del.icio.us account. It’s free and easy.Step one: log into del.icio.us
Step two: create a tag bundle, click “bundle tags” under tag options upper screen right
Step three: Call your tag bundle something like “buzz†or “newsâ€
Step four: add bookmarks to your account
Step five: tag the bookmarks so that they are easy to find and make sure to tag them “buzz” or “news” if you want them to show up in your news mashup.
Step six: Click on the tag “buzz” or “news” from your tag list upper right of page. You’ll know your on the right page because you’ll see an address like this at the top. The “news” at the end represents all the tags named news.
Go to the bottom of the page and there is a small icon like below. This is the rss feed for all the tags labeled news
You’ll want to click on the feed icon and let it open a new browser window.
Copy and past the feed address, it will look something like this http://del.icio.us/rss/HTmob/news
Step seven: take the RSS feed and bring it into Feedburner
Feedburner is a simple way to deal with RSS (really simple syndication) feeds. An RSS feed allows your content to be syndicated. Instead of people always having to come back to your site, they can subscribe to your feed and are notified when you make updates. Feedburner has a variety of free services that allow you to create RSS feeds for podcasts, email newsletters, or to republish your feeds on other people’s pages. For our purposes we’ll be discussing the “buzz boost†feature.
Step one: burn your feed and create a feedburner account - it is a free service
Step two: click on the “my feeds” link, which is to the top left of the page. Then select your feed from the list
Step three: click on the Publicize tab
Step four: click on the BuzzBoost tab located in the column to the left.
Step five: customize your BuzzBoost to meet your needs
Step six: copy and paste your BuzzBoost code into your pages. Since the BuzzBoost code is javascript it won’t work in social networking sites like myspace, but will work in a social networking site like withoutabox’s audience or others that can handle javascript embeds.
Step seven: once the BuzzBoost code is in your pages, you can start using del.icio.us to bookmark news stories, blog entries, or anything that has an internet address. Just tag it “news” or “buzz” and it will show up any where you or your fans have placed the code. Some times it takes about a half an hour or so to show up.
